These four characters were probably the easiest designs to come to me EVER. I've always have a hard time designing protagonists, because I have to stick with them for a long, long time. So on fun, short projects like these, it's actually easier.
Presented here are my first drawings of all these characters. The only one who has changed notably is Rawhide, who's still somewhat pudgy here (and I also experimented with his beard a bit). Note how his build changes between the inked (gray scaled) version and the pencil drawing to his right.
I feel tempted to write about their influences too, but I'm afraid it'd take away your fun in guessing! :P
Thanks for reading and commenting!

sux: Bingo! Jet was among the influences.
Genejoke: Thank you very much!
Lemniskate: Typische Bösewicht-Lippen! :-)
armandoB: Thank you!
Jabali: And that's exactly the justification I need to post them ;-) Thanks!
croxtonhas: Thank you!
DAJB: Ah. TV series have to be either extraordinarily good or interesting in a very specific way for me to watch them, because usually I'm unwilling to invest much time into TV. I guess I love movies for the reason that they're self-contained, and while I do enjoy long narratives, I don't know any TV series which has really made a long, complex narrative work. The series I know will always make it work for one season, and then change things around, and I never get the feeling that it's substantially the same narrative. In a way, Carnivale had that, but it got cancelled after season 2 - boo! And some of the other series I like - Twin Peaks, Millennium, Star Trek: TNG, Mad Men - some of them don't even pretend to have a real narrative, but they make sure to work as stand-alone episodes. So, long story short: Judging from what you wrote - and I trust you on this :P - I may watch Firefly if I have a lot of time on my hands, which is unlikely.
raven37, Peipei, Zephyrion, man in black, mmm bacon0: Thanks!
Firefly (the series) was okay. It played up the "wild west" angle a lot more than the movie.
I don't think you've missed an awful lot if you haven't seen it. It's all right in its own way, but it gets predictable after an episode or two; not really the "classic" its die-hard fans like to think it is.
For my money, Serenity (the movie) is much better simply because the story is self-contained and so all the questions posed at the beginning are actually answered.
