Originally, this scene was inspired by casting shows, or talent shows (which I despise). My first thought was that since all of this takes place in the far future, there should be an artificial design element in it. The "one chance in life" sort of content of the scene pointed me toward a Bollywood type setting, and from my POV, it doesn't get more artificial than Bollywood. Of course, there's nothing particularly futuristic about it - but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to think about what things might *actually* look like in a thousand years. The sort of look we'd call futuristic makes sense if applied to the next decades or the next centuries - but a thousand years into the future? Who's to say? It might even look like the past.
So, I chose this particular approach because it resonated with both the feeling of "heightened drama" and the whole theme of a singular chance in life. I guess Bollywood movies revolve around singular chances much more often than Western movies, because they're the expression of a society in which poverty is a visible part of everyday life - and the only real hope of escaping poverty is a romantic one: a singular, extraordinary, unrealistic chance at wealth. The essence of that might be something like the story of "Slumdog Millionaire", but that's probably because it's a Western (and thus a more "self-conscious") interpretation of a Bollywood theme.
Anyway, this is my favorite way of making stylistic choices - as an additional layer supporting the narrative.

sux: Yup.
Lemniskate: That ties into the Bollywood theme - it's my futuristic version of the dots Indian people have in their forehead. I'm sure they have a proper name, but hey, ignorance is bliss ^^;
xmung: And well-justified too!
metsuke: Because it IS :P
