This week, updates will be on Mon/Wed/Fri. (The first two updates being bonus stuff from the previous TFTIR short.)
I had never drawn a pirate character before, so I had to do some sketches to see what works. As for Solara, I tried to integrate Leiji Matsumoto's design characteristics (slim body, long face), but these only led to her looking extremely alien. So I mainly had to concentrate on making her look recognizably feminine.
The only question I received on the previous page was about the Chakras. It is pretty fundamental though, so the following should give quite a lot of insight into what this comic was meant to express.
Soooo… do the chakras stand for the crew he gathered? And he would've liked Solara to go on an adventure with them?
My idea for the chakras was that they stand for fundamental accomplishments in life. I named them as follows: Youth, ego, friendship, wisdom, wealth, power, heart. I bet you can figure out the metaphoric "values" behind these for yourself. The deal with the space pirate captain was that he (thought he) had accomplished all but one of these. So that's the approach I took to constructing this story. Originally, the story was meant to juxtapose embodiments of anarchy and order, and you can see that concept resurface on page 6. That formed the basis for the comic, and I only infused it with the chakra concept later on. For me, that made the difference between a calculated approach to making this comic, and an emotional, enthusiastic one. I should also mention that my decision to redeem Solara, by actually showing that the pirate's distracting her leads to galactic chaos, was made quite late in the writing stage. I wanted to emphasize that while Solara's reaction might have been harsh, she was fundamentally right. Far too few women in my comics ever get that redeeming moment :P
