I think what Kel says in the first panel is quite similar to what I had Ed (from my previous comic, "signifikat") say to justify his running away from his normal life and job. The whole idea of working on an isolated space station is built on notions which are pretty similar to what's at the basis of Ed's character. Kel isn't rambling as much as Ed did, and he's showing himself to be a bit more vulnerable here.
You could probably choose to work on a station like this to prove how greatly you can perfom under stress and in extraordinary situations. But it can obviously be just as much an excuse to just get away from everything else.
I had already mentioned that Holon would be a variation on some of the themes from signifikat. Structurally, Kano plays a role that's similar to Sunhra's, but she's not *like* Sunhra, and on signifikat there had been no real equivalent to the exchange on THIS page. Still, both Sunhra and Kano play the role of the mysterious, seemingly self-sufficient girl who appears to a man who's on the run… to the outside of everything…
(And this last phrase was a major key for unlocking some of the mysteries behind this conversation. If you didn't get it… the next scene will provide a hint. Or something more… or less… Yeah, I'm feeling mysterious today! :P)
Thanks for reading and commenting.

Accolade Graphics: Thanks!
DAJB: Hah! At least your station seems to have internet access.
Tantz_Aerine: Yay! I… don't think I've really figured out the new fav button. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't :/ Kano is… difficult. That's why the comic is about her, after all ;-)
Genejoke: But… you're a family man :P
alejkhan: Haha! Thanks for reminding/vindicating me.
Legend Comics: She's probably been practicing it for weeks…!
