I didn't exactly grow up in an anti-comics environment; my mother is a librarian, and she used to bring me comics from the library when I was small. Nevertheless, before the advent of the internet, I rarely ever met people who really "got" comics - who understood them as a (potentially) serious art form, a narrative medium akin to movies and literature, the way I do.
