Genejoke: Thanks! I think one of the beautiful things about these types of stories is putting familiar things into odd settings.

Lemniskate: Well, I'd encourage reading it as an extreme metaphor for "verschmähte Liebe". A sort of rejection which is like a force of nature, and for this character, not accepting being rejected is like opposing a law of nature. Which, to me, is much like it seems in real life. As for the sidekick(s): Actually, they're all grown up. That's one of the stylistic quirks of the Leiji Matsumoto style. So, yes, this one is part of the captain's crew, but there was no growing up involved. It's just an odd mix of "super deformed" characters and more normal ones.
