Dika was given the slave Niobe when both girls were at the age of thirteen. Dika, who survived 14 Helot Wars, continues to have horrible nightmares about her life in Sparta. She and Niobe become very close. Dika becomes increasingly dependent on the Nubian girl and in fact has fallen in love with her.
Niobe cannot love Dika any way other than as a sister, and Dika commits a number of rash actions that put a frightening strain on their relationship.
The Dika/Niobe storyline relates a story of a deep and abiding friendship. It is a tale about growing up and learning to be independent, of learning when to love and when to let go.
