Madness is a fascinating topic. Not insanity, not retardation, but madness, the state of mind one falls into from the lofty heights of sanity. Sometimes I wonder what other people are thinking when they aren't thinking "I'm not mad" all the time. The only thing that keeps me lucid is being able to logically deduce my own sanity. But the one great shortcoming of logic is human error, and if empirical evidence suggests my own madness, will I be willing to accept it if I can still prove myself sane with reasoning? Or will that just make me the crazy person who is convinced they aren't?
This is why I'm interested in madness, or the transition from socially acceptable eccentricity to incurable, if functional, insanity. Lovecraft knew it's enough to drive you mad.
