so, yeah, joan's not going to be talking with birds or anything, but she's found herself a pretty loyal protector. The whole 'being in touch with nature" thing may seem a bit hippie-ish for a dark ages-based setting, but the nature thing seems to pop up again and again in the human beleif system. even in Medieval europe St Thomas Aquinus was philosophising about God being present in everything, and by knowing the nature of things, one could better know God. I haven't quite figured out the humans' beleif system(s). It will probably end up being similar to the highly superstitious beleifs of mevieval europe with a sprinkeling of science that's gotten warped over time. Christianity and other modern religions are still around, but they've lost most of their support because of the whole apocalyptic Shadows War thing.
