Drake has just made Joan feel very stupid, but that's ok since she got the horse to bite him.

Drake's cursing in Irish. Basic translation: my god! my ear! shit! shit! shit! MY EAR! Drake's main two languages are french and Irish.

did the horse understand her? yes and no. as a median, she can twist the world around her unconsiously, especialy in situations like this where she's in a story-like setting. In stories animals are always inteligent and loyal. Hence her horse is smarter than the average horse and loyal to her. It can't understand speach, but it knows more vocal commands than most animals would. This twisting of reality that Joan does is one of the more subtle effects or her being a median, it's also probably part of the reason for Kyle's "hero complex."
