I don't really agree with what Drake's saying. The system is riddled with problems, both practical and moral, some of which will become apparent later on, but it's what Drake was raised on, and the whole lack of dead babies is a strong argument in it's favor.

The little dragon in the last shot is Drake's little brother (you saw him in human form on the cover). He's got the multiple horns and spots typical of southern families from Drake's mother's side, but still has the dominant coloring of the southeastern families that they belong to.
