so, we finally get a bit of the explanation behind the attack.

hmm, I guess I should maybe add in a bit of a disclaimer. The main "bad guy" of the flashback is devoutly christian. This isn't meant to be an attack on Christianity. The church was a powerful organization at the time so it makes sense that it be an instrument through which an enterprise this big was organized. It also makes sense that a religion whose holy text affiliates dragons with Satan isn't going to get along well with dragons and is going to be villainised in a dragon's story. The "bad guy" is christian because that's what makes sense for the story.
