Ok, before you think oh my god shes gone all RPG game on us let me explain. 3,000 years ago there was a special and powerful wizard who had a an even more powerful form. Naturally he had an adversary and they eventually destroyed each other in their powerful forms. The magics scattered, eventually creating vortexes that normal wild animals wandered into. These animals mutated in the vortexes, adopting the wizard's unspoken rule of taking turns attacking until defeated or you escape from the vortex, which is like its own environment by this time. If someone were to remain in battle with a monster for too long then they themselves would mutate so its feasible to finish the battle quickly af possible.

However, that's not an ordinary monster….
