I work at our local newspaper doing page design and layout. Part of my daily routine is scanning and inserting syndicated political cartoons into our paper's editorial section. Fun stuff.
Gabe works with me, and actually has been doing local editorial cartoons for over five months, and actually is the exception to this. (i'll plug his drunkduck account for this, which you can check out here. http://www.drunkduck.com/Local_Look_Awesometown_Editorials/index.php)) I just wanted to get that out of the way before i get a nasty comment. :)
But anyway, in true essence, many of these political cartoons are simple facts, clarified by heavily over-labelling whatever is being represented (say, a donkey in a business suit, a heavily overcaricaturized hillary clinton, what have you.) , and that's it. a cartoon by name association, basically.
What you really get is nothing you don't already know, and is essentially someone's assy (i.e. - editorial) opinion on a matter that is already prevalent in the media. Wow. Dubya's approval ratings are low. Let's clarify that in a single black and white inked panel, with a midget bush with a big head, standing on a table, saying 'everybody likes what i do!' while pointing to a graph, LABELLED approval rating, rocketing downwards. Now let's syndicate it for every fucking newspaper on earth to have the option to run, to fill space.
Granted, i'm the least politically motivated american there is. I'm actually the cause of a lot of problems, (especially in the fact that i don't vote. or if i do, it's usually in the wrong, blindly, and without any education on the mater, except for what i've read on the ballot.) I classify myself as pretty much middle of the road, and am generally passive about political agenda, because, well, face it. I'm an idiot. Who likes playing video games and not being bothered by anybody.
This comic kind of covers it, because, despite luis' 'inspired acclaim to political charge', demonstrated here, he's not terribly political either. (or at least, we haven't talked about it. we're too busy discussing voltron kicking people's asses, and the like.)
Maybe this comic really shows how ultimately ignorant i am. who knows. At least it got a laugh.
