Those magnetic anomalies, never exactly certain what they are. Much of the technology in the story's universe uses similar principles. A bunch of species all using different ways to do the same stuff based on the same science. Sensors ain't magic you know. In fact they're only as good as the scriptwriter wants them to be.

So the fans say endlessly:
Hey, but in episode 23 they could detect this and then in episode 34 they can't and then in episode 42…
