I'd like to explain the device that split Jix and Remula and gave Aranis her new body:

Let's compare the device to a computer file (bad example, I know…) Alright, the Jix/Remula body is one computer. The machine made a new computer and cut and pasted the Remula "folder" into the new computer. If you believe in souls, the soul would be in the Remula or Jix folder. So essentially it moves the corresponding soul with it.

Alright, now with Aranis. The device created her new body (or computer in the example) and it cut and pasted her mind into the new computer. Now, she didn't have two, so essentially the other shell is a soulless, mindless husk. It's not dead, per say, but it cannot function with the "file" that it transfered. Since there is nothing to do with the extra body, the only thing Remula and Aranis can do is kill it. And that's nothing like pulling the plug on someone in a coma.

Eh…I don't know, I'd like to think that Jix had a separate soul from Remula, if they do indeed have souls.
