As of this page the relentless barrage of unnecessary plot that has been peppered throughout this story can all be considered the insanely elaborate set-up to this joke. I certainly think it is.

This is a fine example of, well it's a fine example of me reusing props, backdrops, elements, and the drawing of Ted from page 40, but it's also a fine example of one of Ted's many roles in the comic, in this case he's speaking for the average reader, pointing out when the comic gets up its own ass.
