Yeah, katanas really are cool swords in how sharp they are, but would never hold up in a sword fight. The things are so brittle because of the process to make them so sharp. Time-Rider simply got a heavier, more durable sword. Now, at least, the villain is less one weapon (however little he has used it so far).
