Deus ex machina?  Not completely.  On page 2, you can see a broken window, and that's the source of the crash that Eiderdown first responded to.  Of course, this is rather fast response time for the cops, but maybe it's an off night.  I know from experience that it takes Redding police over an hour to get to some places that are two blocks away from the police station on a one-way street going that way.  They really need to up their response time, darn it.  Granted, that's for non-emergencies, but I also have heard an alarm go off at the sheriff's station for hours–you'd think they'd especially speed up to help some of their own.
