Long Story Arc 4-07
Lemniskate onAction!
On a completely unrelated note, I saw Star Trek yesterday, and it was real fun (the Starfleet starship redesigns are especially sexy), but two things attracted my notice:
I. It seems to habe become a very anthropocentric world. Starfleet academy filled only with humans and some token aliens? Could this result from an actual american mentality like "no outsiders"?
II. It's not optimistic anymore. It's darker than previous incarnations. Well, okay, I haven't seen neither the films 9 or 10 nor the Enterprise series, I stopped watching after Voyager, but seriously: Kirk shooting at the Narada after it is about to be sucked into the singularity? And then being honoured as having behaved verily according to the principles of Starfleet? Hm. Plus the used future look and the depiction of backwater Iowa…
For me this indicates that people don't believe anymore. We seem to live in a world where there is no good. Playing straight the utopia like TOS or TNG (yes, DS9 and VOY already ventured into some darker territories) couldn't work anymore because we wouldn't believe it.
So, this is a great movie which reflects the changes going on in our society. It's good for the Star Trek franchise that it has been adapted, but it lost something on the way.
