Yes the monster is supposed to be dark and rather undescript. It's why the Juthanians have trouble pinpointing exactly what or who these creatures are.

Their initial suspects - the Merakians - no one really knows what kind of power the Sagess has so for all they know and all you know, it could be this ;D
