Growing up my family would share stories of the vuot bien or essentially the migration that some Vietnamese people took during the war to go to escape the country..
As a child my parents forbade me to read books about it. Probably hoping to put the entire matter entirely behind them. I suppose that was why I was super excited about the prospect of learning more about it when I'd get to high school.
When we got to that point we didn't learn about the Vietnamese people, we learned about the U.S. military tactics and why they failed.
It's not essentially a bad thing but that's when I learned about perspective. And how information is relayed through generations.
And when my friend's father asked, "Did you guys not want us in your war?" made me understand a little more of how limited our understanding can be.
I'm not bitter by this. It's just the way it is. McPherson's "A Loaf of Bread" made a lot of sense to me. There's no point in blame when we have the capacity to understand.
Anyways. I'm going to go grab a cop and punch a car.
