Smackatar (Part 22)

Mr. S and Miss Q were originally intended to be new characters in the comic. They even made a cameo appearance in a crowd scene a long time ago, although I used an alternate version of Miss Q in that strip. The plan was that they would be the mysterious operators of an independent cargo ship who might actually be time travelers. And I planned for them to run up against Commander Valkyrie, and possibly Schwartz. The duo were older characters of mine that I've used in other fiction, and I thought it would be fun for me to use them here.

So, I started out this storyline with the intent of finally introducing Mr. S and Miss Q into the story. The big reveal at the end was to be that they were also Players, not just video game characters. And the real versions would end up butting heads with Schwartz and Galanos in the future. But then a couple of readers began to suspect that there was more going on with Mr. S and Miss Q than met the eye. And they were right. But it got me thinking that maybe there was a better twist I could use, and a way to tie the events of "Smackatar" into previous stories. About halfway through, I decided on the ending you see above. Knowing how twisted Schwartz and Valkyrie's relationship can be, I thought it was perfect. I thought it suddenly made the whole thing more relevant, and it happened to be an easy fit. Also, I decided I'm at the point where I want to focus on developing the characters I have and get closer to resolving the many long-running story arcs in this comic. It just isn't the time to introduce a whole new storyline. Of course, it's still possible that the real Mr. S and Miss Q are out there somewhere…
