Seriously, the first answer most people will have for dealing with a serious technical problem with machinery and such is to hit it.. I do it, I can safely assume you do it. Hell, our ancestors probably hit sundials or something when they didn't seem to be working properly..

But Yay! The spaceship's doing something useful!
