Lan really can't figure out which way he wants to run.. but feels its better to run then it is to hope and get told no… and by faking his own death he is trying to get rid of walter's power over him..
Walter as Lan guardean can trun off and on Lans magic.. he granted Lan freedom till sun up so Lan could help warmwind and his family. the conditions of that freedom where that Lan was to take his true form and wait for walter to come get him
