Charon or Phlegyas, took the newly dead from one side of the river to the other if they had an obolus (coin) to pay for the ride. Corpses in some regions in ancient Greece were buried with a coin on thier eyelids to pay the fare. Some authors claim the price to be 2 coins, placed over each eye of the deceased. Those who could not pay had to wander the banks of the river for one hundred years. i guess they had a free ride day once every 100 years or some thing…
