I needed a plot device like loss of memory to jumpstart the story, but knew it couldn't have happened naturally. That's where Arielle the echidnae goddess comes in. Arielle's working toward her own goals, and maybe if Pulse forgets about Rika and his former life as a soldier, it'll help her achieve those goals.

…Oh, and by the way, she may have made it more likely for Pulse to wash up on the island without any of his clothes. Hey, she's still a young goddess, y'know.
