If you read the interview between gaming website peoples and blizzard diablo making peoples, there was a chat about how their choice of graphic style conflicted with what the fans had in mind, and he shot down about 4 or 5 popular edits personally, it was awesome, but one of the originals had a rainbow in the background, so the blizzard dude talked about how 'It's Diablo, with rainbows!' was a pitched idea, but they decided on 'It's Diablo, with pants!' because they added an armor slot for pants.

I can see why.

Oh, and I like the new graphical design, it'd seem like Blizzard was trying to copy their now-disbanded North counterpart otherwise. (For not-so smart fans, Blizzard NORTH made Diablo 1 & 2, but got dissolved, and most people from it went and made the not-too-successful Hellgate London)
