City of Intrigue pg 12
Lord Rend onThis page was a pain in the neck to do.
…
…*Ahem*…
Well, I am fairly happy with this page actually, the shading turned out well. The only problem I have is text size, but I guess it is not too bad.
Couple notes on this page…
The odd little thing with the green glow in the first panel is the remains of the vines Mira summoned earlier. Life alchemy is capable of growing plant life from stone, but only as long as the spell is being channeled.
Just in case anyone is wondering, Lockre is not actually being bitter or anything, he just is stating facts.
As for what a Fader is…
Faders, as Lockre states, are known by many names, the more friendly ones are the ones he is listing. The name comes from the fact that they slowly fade from existence over time, their bodies becoming more and more insubstantial as they phase out of reality. Eventually they completely disappear and die in theory. Generally this takes about twelve years, but some Faders are able to live longer by having spell-bodies take the place of their original bodies. Spell-bodies are just regenerating shells of magic that are capable of containing and maintaining the neural network of their 'host'. However, they do not last long (relatively); only about fifty years in normal individuals, only two or three years for Faders. As Lockre says though, there is another way for Faders to prolong their lives: by draining the magic and energy out of other mages, killing those unfortunate mages.
There are not a lot of them, only sixty four in Lockre's generation (out of hundreds of millions), but their numbers have been growing exponentially with each generation (his is the seventh generation). Due to this and the above factors, some of the mage orders, particularly the Unuon, consider them to be a great threat to the future of magic and mages.
The only mage orders that do accept them are the Life Dancers (out of pity) and the Aetheris (since they believe it is their fault the Faders exist). The other mage orders have varying opinions, ranging from distrust to actual hate.
As for how they come to be, the Aetheris are somewhat correct in their belief that they are at fault, since Faders often result from two Aetheris Sages having a child. It does not always happen, but only two of the one hundred and twenty seven Faders came from a different union and even then, one of the parents was an Aetheris Sage. Since they have command of Chaos, Order, Strife, Null and psychic magics, Faders always end up joining the Aetheris Sage Order.
Alright, that is all I have for now, see you all next Wednesday.
