City of Intrigue pg 27
Lord Rend onSorry everyone, it is back to one page updates for a little while here now (excepting if someone chooses extra updates as the contest prize). However, I do have some missed hiatus updates to make up for, so there might be some extra update days on the weekends here over the next couple months.
This page was difficult to do, particularly the Rift seen on this page. On the other hand, the perspective is nice enough that it was worth the effort. Again, I am happy with how the effects on the page turned out, something that I was really worried about while working on the page.
Lockre is justifiably confused here, as I imagine anyone would be if they suddenly found themselves watching themselves… Unfortunately, being taken over by Dark also triggered the fading of Lockre's body prematurely. Under 'normal' circumstances Faders keep their original body until around the age of twelve, but Lockre lost his at the age of ten. This fading is what caused the Rift, as Light explains, and it is a common mental scar that all Faders share, some of them having several (particularly if they are the kind who decide to go after other mages in order to keep their original bodies intact).
As for the events that Light says none of them remember, Lockre was rescued because his parents were going to call him in for the afternoon meal and found him soon after he faded. Since even after their body fades a Fader still flickers in and out of visible existence for awhile, they were able to rush him back to the Academy and managed to get him into the Spell Loom in time to save him. The fate of the others involved in the incident is a little more ambiguous though… still, it will have effects later on, that much I assure you.
Moving on, Spell Looms are incredibly powerful magical artifacts that are commonly used to cast the most complex spells there are. For example, it is impossible to craft a realistic spell body without one, seeing as one has to create the magical links between the shields that make up the body and the Mind Stone and allow the person to move normally. Not to mention other things like vocal and hearing spells that allow them to function normally in society. Anyways, these constructs must remain in a magic saturated environment in order to function and remain charged, hence they are always stored within pocket dimensions created at the intersection point of several Aura Lines. If removed from this dimension, the magic woven into them bleeds off into the surrounding environment, rendering the loom useless. Since it takes a mage approximately seventy years to craft a loom, the loss of even one loom due to removal is considered a major loss.
As a side note, the existence of these magic-saturated pocket dimensions has led many mages to conclude that magic is more than just a generalized energy field and is actually a kind of parallel dimension. Faders really like that supposition since it gives them the hope that they do not fade away so much as shift over it continue living in that dimension.
