City of Intrigue pg 30
Lord Rend onWell, here it is, an extra update of Linked Fate. This page was not overly difficult to do except for the second to last panel. Despite that fact though, I am not particularly happy with how the fifth panel turned out, primarily because of the text bubbles. Otherwise though, everything turned out okay.
Moving on, on this page Light gives an abridged version of history, most specifically relating to why they left. While his parents did believe that having family around would keep Lockre emotionally stable, they also had to leave to prevent certain repercussions from affecting Lockre. In essence, when Dark smacked the thugs from earlier down, he critically injured them but did not finish them off. As a result they were able to identify their 'attacker' as a younger wolf Ferilis, which prompted the tribal councils to begin investigating the Academy. The process was greatly (and predictably) delayed by a number of diplomatic regulations on both sides and the fact that the So'la Ferilis had attacked first. Under Union law, Lockre's actions would be excused as self defense but under So'la law his actions constitute assault and battery. This is because the So'la Ferilis believe that one should only defend their families, not themselves specifically. Unfortunately, this creates a rather nasty legal conflict that would lead to a massive diplomatic incident (well, even more so). After consulting with the other Academy leaders, Aeric and Aria were told that it would be best if they simply left. Already having decided to return to the mainland so Lockre could be around Marcus and Tyria, the couple agreed and made arrangements for others to replace them. This process took months anyways, giving Lockre time to recover emotionally.
As for the investigation into what happened that took place… When Lockre and his parents left it was basically the same as modern diplomats invoking diplomatic immunity. The investigation was allowed to run its course, but it basically ran in circles and stalled with little in the way of a conclusion. This lack of results would eventually develop into a scandal that would lead to the Academy temporarily being disbanded for several years while new rules for interaction were negotiated.
Moving away from politics and onto the real action, the ocean between So'la and Antranias (continent where the Union is) is home to one of the 'hurricane belts' on Tyn. These storms are often incredibly violent and feature more electrical activity than most storms on earth could sustain (due to the atmosphere already being energized thanks to magic). By the same reason, these storms are also slightly magical in nature and, as such, react badly to the magical crystals that the Union commonly uses. The lightning rapidly energizes the crystal and causes them to explode in a fashion similar to a transformer hit by lightning. Unfortunately for Lockre's parents, Aetheris Sages tend to carry a good number of magic crystals with them…
