Author notes
City of Intrigue pg 34
Lord Rend onFinally, some time to make a good author's comment… (Don't worry, I will go back through and fix the gaps and placeholders).
First, some semi-bad news: Linked Fate will be updating on Saturdays instead of Wednesdays until further notice. I dislike changing the schedule, but between trying to make up for missed updates and my own obligations I have no time to guarantee a Wednesday update, as last week showed me. Thus, starting next week updates will occur on Saturday until further notice (there may be an update this Saturday as well, it depends).
Moving on, I am actually fairly happy with this page, particularly how the effects in the fourth panel turned out. Still working on the updated shading though, it will probably take me a little bit to get it down right. The one thing I really did not like about this page (and it is something I will mention on the other pages) is the reversion to the flat gray background color. True, I know I could have made the backgrounds more detailed, but Lockre's not going to remember/ notice details while in battle.
Ah well…
This page also features a unique attribute of Faders as they come close to dying: the ability to harmlessly absorb most any magic attacks directed against them, as seen in the fourth panel. There are exceptions to this, particularly in the case of incredibly potent magics, but by and large attacking an end stage Fader with magic is a bad idea. The odd lighting that can be seen in that panel is a magical 'flashback,' a result of the spells being consumed by the void inside Argus.
On a related note, the spells that Light and Dark are using are Focused Ray and Void Lance respectively. Focused Ray, as its name implies, is a focused beam of light that a Unuon mage creates by bending the light in an area into the beam. Most Unuon mages further augment this beam with shields and barriers to create a higher intensity ray. In Light's case, he is not quite skilled enough to do so, but his attack would still be enough to cut through most non-magical armor in a few seconds. Dark's attack is a little more potent and is drawn from the Null category of spells. Void Lance is, very basically, a banishment spell that instantly warps whatever it comes in contact with into another dimension. It is quite good at leaving nasty holes in anything it is aimed at, despite being a fairly low level Null spell. On the other hand, using Void Lance typically renders the hand that cast it numb and useless for several minutes afterward so casting it in rapid succession is nearly impossible.
