City of Intrigue pg 42
Lord Rend onWell, here it is, Wednesday and… I finally update exactly on time again! Something which should become commonplace here for a while now, thanks in part to this phase. True, there is not much to these pages, but it means that my buffer can return (I already have a couple pages in the buffer from this phase). My apologies, I know that walls of text with just a few images is not exactly what everyone wants to see, but at least this is a short phase. Not to mention it is better than having the characters actually explain the research in story… Anyways, aside from the text wall, I am happy with this page overall. I also tried a little bit of a different color scheme with this page since it is technically not me that is drawing this (see notes below), please let me know what you think. Right now it is not going to be permanent, but if everyone likes the new method better, I will keep it.
Now, moving on to the content of the page itself… This phase consists of Mira's entries into her journal describing her personal thoughts on her activities. The artwork in this phase is from her point of view for the most part since she has a habit is sketching things in her journal anyway (that is my excuse and I am sticking to it). As a result of this, all of the text in this phase is going to have the original script underneath it. It is very faint, but it is there.
In any case, you might notice the word 'aria' used in the dating system Mira uses and remember that Lockre's mother is named Aria. Aria is the Union word for 'day' or 'dawn,' derived from the name of their sun Aris. When represented with the crescent moon-like symbol it is reference to the date, while the normal spelling is used only for the name Aria. In English her name would be the equivalent of the name 'Dawn.' Such differentiation between a person's name and other meanings is common for the Ferilis, particularly in the Union. Other examples include any names related to minerals (e.g. Crystal (female), Silver (male)), names related to actions (like Chase) and names that are also concepts.
Anyways, moving on, the scene depicted takes place in the Magic & Magic Theory section of a library. The books generally contain information on Magical Theory, while the scrolls contain information on spells and how to cast them… It is evident which is the more popular subject to read. Important to note is that Magic Theory is a fairly loose subject, it not only includes theories on how magic works and where it comes from, but also covers any mystery related to magic. Which is why the 'Nuun Disappearances' book is found there.
One final note, which is really only for those who might be curious is the number system that the Ferilis use. Like humans, the Ferilis number system is based of the number of digits they have. This means that they have a base eight number system so '10' is equal to the human number eight. For convenience, all of the numbers are converted to the base ten human system (although original scripts, the Ferilis writing, keep the numbers in the base eight format).
