When Paul started, I drew one of his strips and showed both to people I know. From friends and family, to a Chief Editor, the verdict was the same. Paul kicks my arse.
Well, a few of you have voiced your opinions on my art, namely encouraging me to continue. Well don't worry, because I'm going to do it. The problem is, I have several methods that I'm considering.
What I'm trying to do is, one day, be able to draw my own comic. I don't care about be able to ink, colour and letter (Although that would be nice) I just want to be able to draw it, sort of like how Jack Kirby worked back in the day. That way, it's almost entirely my vision. It'll look mostly how I want it to.
However, there are three ideas I have come up with to help me improve and I don't know which one to go with.
1. Sketching - This is the current method I'm working with. I have a sketchbook and plan to fill it, along with another one, and then I'll hopefully improve. This is what I've come up with for that method. The plan is, I can't even think of starting a new solo comic until I complete both books. There's a flaw though, in which I sketch in a completely different style to the one I use for sequential pages.
2. Solo Comic - This is usually the method I go with, and now it's feeling like the most logical. My plan is to draw a comic book no one will ever see. I draw at least seven issues, then toss them away and start from scratch. The problem with this is I tend to set myself to too high standards and give up in frustration when I can't achieve them.
3. Inking - Most pencils are pretty tight these days, so I'm thinking maybe I should offer to do the inks for a penciller whose style I like. After a couple of years, I can try to pencil on my own, and ink too, which will mean I don't have to hire anyone to fill that spot. The problem with this is it's relying heavily on the skills of the penciller. That and I need to buy a tablet.
Anyway, to you artists out there, which method do you think would be best? One of the three I mentioned, a combination or some other method I may have missed?
Also, while I'm thinking about it, I need an opinion on another project. What are your thoughtson this?
