081 - Calling Home

Been a while since he called his mother. What a naughty son.

I've been reading a lot of those "Advice for writers who want to break into the comic industry" pieces lately and they all say the same thing: It's hardest for us to get in. An artist you can just take one quick look and know if they're good or not. But a script? That takes a while to read.

So, what are writers to do if they want to break in? Well, it's pretty simple, even though not many of those advice pieces have thought to mention it. Find a part of the art you like, and do it.

"But David, I can't draw" you might be saying. And I can't either. But pencils aren't the only thing that needs doing. I'm currently working on my inking and lettering. And I was originally going to try and make it as a colourist before my screen screwed up and decided not to show off photoshop properly.

Pick one of those four jobs, practice until you're at pro level and then send off some samples to the companies you like. They always need artists. Search for tutorials online to help you improve and soon, you'll be through the door in no time.

It also helps if you need an artist for a webcomic. Not all artists can do everything (Aside from the numerous exceptions) so if you can offer to take a job or two off their hands, it can make things easier.

PS Remember to swing by the main site.
