Lake Placid's Overlooked Birthday
Awesometown onThis comic is based on a article that ran in Highlands Today about Lake Placid NY mailing birthday cards and packages of maple syrup to Lake Placid FL to commemorate the Florida town's 80th birthday anniversary.
In the article it stated that none of the three recipients found the birthday cards in their mail, and more embarassingly Police Chief Phil Williams and Mayor Tom Katsanis didn't even know the anniversary came and went.
"I wasn't aware of it," Katsanis said.
As if this wasn't ignorant enough… The Police Cheif was quoted as saying "I really don't care what happens in New York. I got enough things happening here."
Later in the day, realizing how much of an asshole he must have sounded earlier Williams called back and tried to explaine his earlier reaction.
"I get so many calls and concerns of their situations up there," he said." I'm like 'what in the world are they talking about' only to find out they were in Lake Placid, N.Y."
The only person in the town who, it seems, has any idea what is going on is Eileen May, CEO of the Lake Placid Florida Chamber of Commerce. She stated she did get her package including a copy of the newspaper The Lake Placid News from the New York town, with a headline detailing the anniversary. Unlike the other two intended recipients, she said she was "keenly aware" of last week's anniversary.
Lake Placid (N.Y.) Visitors Bureau CEO James McKenna said in a phone interview that the cards were mailed out June 4 and signed by himself, the town's mayor and two other officials. The town also sent cards out in 1977, on the 50th anniversary of the town's establishment.
"We just came across it and decided, 'what a nice gesture,'" McKenna said. He wasn't sure why the maple syrup did not arrive yet.
