There's just something odd and fascinating about those old action series. Don Pendleton's The Executioner series is usually considered to be the one that started it all, although you can find earlier books that seem to fit. Probably because once War Against The Mafia sold out without the publisher doing any advertising the publishers went out and specifically asked writers to produce similar book series. And once those sold well, other publishers got involved…

The series names are fun: The Executioner; The Destroyer; The Death Merchant; The Butcher; The Hitman; Killinger; and while I couldn't find it I swear my dad had a book in The Axeman series.

The AXEMAN… Pokerman isn't even parodic when there was a legitimate series called The Axeman. If Pokerman wasn't the name of 1970's action series, it's only because no one thought of it!
