Just the other day I was reading somewhere a piece by someone who had worked with – something like small-time crooks who were incarcerated. S(he) said that one thing they all had in common was the conviction that they were much cleverer than everyone else.

That seems like a good five-word character note for Dennis. I'm sure most of us (unfortunately) have known someone like him – never ahead, always trying to get ahead by "dealing", always certain s(he)'s one step ahead of the people s(he)'s trying to cheat.
