barking_frog onFreud suggested that many neurotics (this term is no longer in professional use, having been divided into more specific classifications) are perfectly healthy except for perhaps one little area where they attempt to repress something they couldn't deal with at one time. He suggested the unsuccessfully repressed problem doesn't lie quietly, but goes on to fester as the mind deadlocks – one part trying to reconcile the problem and another doing the old job of keeping it buried. This daily battle, he theorized, drains psychic resources which we'd otherwise be able to put to healthy use.
Fireworks can happen when one gets too close to such a neurotic's "sore spot".
