I don't think anyone uses the word "steady" like that anymore. Haha. Only in the phrase "going steady".
If you want to sound old, instead of asking someone to be your boyfriend/girlfriend, ask them to be your steady.

of boyfriends, mine finally got around to reading my comic and
yesterday he threatened me: "Emily, if something bad happens to Sonia at
the end of this comic…"
Haha. I make no promises!
Oh,
Christmas. How I love you. Especially garland. I LOVE garland. It's so
shiny and soft. The garland at my place has gotten pretty old and ratty,
though. If I had the money I'd buy nothing but garland to decorate my
house. Even the outside.
