So some people do have family names, in a way. A family name is more of a prestigious title, to show that you belong to a group of the upper class. Families that often have been around for centuries and established a significant level of influence and hold a certain reputation. You can bestow your family name upon anyone you see fit to represent you, your company and/or values.
