For the most part, Death is reasoning in this way just to keep Melody from freaking out.

Because… let's face it, the act of dying is called DEATH. His appearance is pretty much the final nail of the coffin (so to speak), though he's noting that he's not the one who started it.

Seriously, if you say someone dies of natural causes, you're full of it. Chances are, something on that person failed 'em. Or they were sick. Or had cancer.

Or some external cause… but nobody dies of Death, right? Not since the Plague…

Regarding souls: I have always had an idea I wanted to use for a story, in which souls could be held like marbles - and maybe even played with as such.

It just seems like an easier way for people to handle them.
