Eureka 7 is also awesome. The main character's pseudo-adoptive parents both explode. Like, one actually has a bomb detonated inside of him.

It rocked to watch the kid reminisce about the magical lessons about family they taught him, and then I tried to time how long until he remembers "Oh shit, they both died in HORRIBLE BLOODY EXPLOSIONS!!"
