The background went black because the Embodiment of Evil stepped from the atom generator for the first time and gave the room a demonic presence for a time. Since it's allowing Dr. Light to live, he's aging faster.

Shadowblade, you got about the gist of Elfen Lied, the main character, Lucy, has invisible arms called vectors, and also two horns on her head. She managed to befriend a boy her age, but she kills his sister and his father. The father of the boy wasn't a pervert or anything, but about the middle of the series, a girl that the boy and his cousin basically adopted was sexually abused by her father. It's pretty bloody, and brutal, and awesome!

By the way, I too enjoyed every minute of Scott Pilgrim.
