I considered having Degami's flashbacks in grayscale, but then I recalled that women are more color-oriented, whereas men are more motion-oriented, a trait that has been attributed to the traditional male-hunter female-gatherer role. Extending this, then, men (who would be suited toward finding and following a moving prey) find more significance in the way things change, specifically in terms of position, and women (who would be suited toward identifying and preparing plants from known varieties) find more significance in the way things are or were at a given moment, and consider change, especially in color, to be indicative of a process rather than a specific action. In hindsight, I see that the images shown in this flashback demonstrate a variety of things: processes, moments, and individual actions. And this is all well and good. My agenda isn't to pigeonhole Degami with a particular stereotype, though I feel it helps to be mindful of this sort of thing and how it can affect the work. While I tend to have more confidence and hence more fun with my female characters, that's probably in part because I tend to invest them with strongly combative personalities. If my male characters come off as flat in comparison… then there's probably something I could stand to do about that.
