Daddy Long-Legs is a novel that has had several movie and TV adaptations, including a 1990 anime series. While the concept of a girl of humble origins being sponsored to attend an elite school by a mysterious older man has seen its share of use in anime, this is the only instance I can think of that features an episode about hot-dog eating.

"Purple Rose" is an example of the Daddy Long-Legs type, from the manga (and anime) Glass Mask. Set in an acting troupe, the story explores the protagonist's emotions and circumstances as she prepares for various roles.
