Chapter 8, pages 4 and 5.

The fictional "Read or Don't" manga and its worldly protagonist are a parody of Hideyuki Kurata's title with the same initials. Kurata's works include scripts for many breakout anime titles of the 90's, such as El Hazard, Excel Saga, and Battle Athletes. Noriko's first name is a reference to the main character of Gainax's 1988 super robot/sports parody, Gunbuster. Her last name is a reference to Walt Whitman, the poet.

Molly's first name is Lawrencia. She was named, or at least initialed, for Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The last line is a reference to "Pinky and the Brain".
