He's putting up a fight… not bad for a borderline cripple.

In case it's not been clear, Paul has lower back problems and is in constant pain, and that's before he took an axe to the shoulder. He walks with a crutch and even then slowly. Without pain relief and having aggravated it in the first fight every step is agony, hence the screaming as he fights.

Also as mentioned briefly in the first chapter he is/was into martial arts. He's essentially the fighter of the group, just an older broken down shell of one.
