ConnorLachmanec onShe gestures to a balcony. “Citizens of Atlantis! Please welcome the royal couple: Emperor Phosphorus and Empress Zoe.”
The couple steps out onto the balcony clothed in resplendent royal purple, flanked by courtiers and heavily armoured imperial guards. The crowd cheers: “Long live Emperor Phosphorus! Long live Empress Zoe!”
The siren hovers in place, fingers pressed together. “In keeping with tradition,” she grins wickedly, “today’s entertainment shall begin with a good old-fashioned gladiator fight in honour of Our Lord. Our venerable theocrat Iolanta will lead us in the opening prayer.”
Iolanta, a severe-looking elderly trans woman dressed in the ceremonial robes and crested mitre of a high priestess, steps forward with open arms, the sun shining on her bare breasts and the obsidian death whistle she wears around her neck.
