Just to let you know, I'm a real guest at I-Con 27 at Stony Brook this April 4th -6th (I'm so proud). http://www.iconsf.org/anthro.php ******************************** Dawn from Zorphbert and Fred (here on DrunkDuck, be sure to check it out, it's the bomb) mentioned in the notes for one of her strips that she switched back to using a Speedball 513EF nib for inking. Always wanting to try something new, I ran out today and bought a nib and holder at Michael's Art and Crap supply. Not one to test anything first, I inked today's strip using the nib.
I liked it…but…
I use cheap all purpose copy paper to pencil my strips, so the thin ink I had laying around started bleed, making weird little spider legs on all my lines. Not to worry, I had some El Cheapo Super Black India Ink that someone gave me, I tried to use that. This junk was so thick (and it smells) it clogged the nib and I had to keep cleaning it with hot water. In the words of Charlie Brown, "ARRGG!"
Still, I loved the feel of using a nib to ink, and I think if I use a different paper and/or a better india ink I will have a new inking tool. I was using the Faber-Castell brush pens but the tips get dull too quickly with the way I ink, making the line too thick when you want them thin.
Once again, big thanks to Dawn of Zorphbert and Fred for the tip.
